Originally a Kaleesh from the planet Kalee, Grievous fought for his people against the Yam'rii in the Huk War. He was involved in an accident, set up by Count Dooku, and became near-death. He was resurrected by the Intergalactic Banking Clan to the Separatists's cause and Dooku trained him in lightsaber combat. He succeeded in killing dozens of Jedi over the course of the Clone Wars and was known for taking the lightsabers of the fallen Jedi, with which he made a collection of.
Grievous, after his resurrection, only his eyes, brain, and certain internal organs remained as the last sign of his past organic life. The rest of him was composed of a special mechanical frame created by the Geonosians. This lead to most people referring to him as a droid, which irritated him.
With his new body he was faster and stronger. His arms could split in two so that he could hold four lightsabers at once.
In 19 BBY, Grievous lead the attack on Coruscant which became the Battle of Coruscant when the Republic Navy intercepted. The General fled the battle, having failed in kidnapping Chancellor Palpatine.
Shortly after this, he lead a Separatist force to the netural world of Utapau and conquered it, creating a safe home for the Separatist Council. Later the Council would be moved to Mustafar, just before Republic forces, lead by Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, reached the planet. As the Battle of Utapau raged on, Kenobi chased Grievous through Pau City and finally dueled him on the General's secret landing platform. It was here that the General was killed by Obi-Wan.(SW: Revenge of the Sith)
