United Federation of Planets

The United Federation of Planets is a supranational, interstellar governance comprised of planetary governments united under the values of liberty, peace, freedom, autonomy, and respect for life and sentience. It controls approximately 8,000 light-years of interstellar space and is said to be one of the greatest ruling powers in the Alpha Quadrant.

Foundingg[]

The Federation was founded in 2161 after the end of the Earth-Romulan War. When founded the Federation Starfleet was also founded, out of the military and exploratory forces of the different worlds including the Earth Starfleet. The Coalition of Planets is considered to be the first stirrings of what led to the Federation, and as the preceding power.

Government[]

The main power of the Federation is the Federation Council(legislative branch). The Federation also has an executive branch led by the Federation President. It also has a judicial branch whose supreme authority is the Federation Supreme Court. Each planet is still semi-autonomous but most foreign policy and overall defensive matters are handled by the Federation.

The Federation most recently had 150 member civilizations and was spread over 1,000 planets. It also spanned 8,000 light years in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Economics[]

The Federation does not use money except when dealing with other races with which they use the Federation Credit. Most planets in the Federation are rich in resources making the non usage of money much easier.

Conflicts[]

The Federation's expansion brought it into contact with many hostile races. These include the Klingon Empire, the Cardassian Union, the Talarians, the Sheliak, the Tzenkethi, the Borg, and the Dominion (along with the Cardassians and the Breen Confederacy). The Klingons never actually got into an all-out war, the only time a war started it was stopped four days later by the Organians. There were also a number of small skirmishes between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire.

Starfleet[]

Starfleet is the naval force of the Federation. Unlike a majority of their neighbors, Starfleet is more reasearch and exploration based. Numerous strategy's are used when contacting new species. THe most important is the Prime Directive, under no circumstances is involvement which would change a culture's normal development allowed, even if crew or entire ships are at stake. In all Star Trek expansions, TV series and books, Starfleet is the main focus.
